Robert and Angeline moved to Illinois with Robert's parents shortly after their marriage.

The US Civil War Draft Registration Records dated 1 Sept 1863 lists Robert and his brothers, Martin and Clarkson, in Astoria Twp, Illinois.

Robert died sometime before 22 Dec 1866; the date of his father's Last Will and Testament. In the Will, John S. indicates, "It is my desire that my beloved son's (Robert C Hefling dec) widow, Angeline Hefling, may have a home and be considered a member of the family as long as she may desire."

  Robert's tombstone in Salem Cemetery.

Birth and death records were not yet recorded at this time by the state of Illinois. We found his tombstone in the Salem Cemetery. It was very deteriated, in person you could make out "Robert C Hefling" however the dates were very faint. It looked like the stone had been broken and someone had re-cemented it back into place losing the lower part of the stone and wording/dates.

In the Salem Cemetery, Angeline's tombstone is on the same row as her first husband. She and a son, William A Wheeler, died on the same day and share the stone.
